Ngien Hoon Ping named as new SMRT CEO

SMRT Corporation, a leading multi-modal public transport operator in Singapore, has recently announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Ngien Hoon Ping has been appointed as the new SMRT CEO. He will succeed Mr. Neo Kian Hong as Group CEO of SMRT on August 1, 2022.

Mr. Neo Kian Hong will step down from the role of SMRT CEO while helping Mr. Ngien join SMRT as a board director on May 1, 2022 to facilitate a smooth transition. Mr. Neo Kian Hong will stay on the board as an adviser till October 31, 2022.

SMRT Chairman, Mr. Seah Moon Ming, said: “The Board has put in place a leadership succession plan with a robust talent pipeline at different levels. We welcome Hoon Ping to the SMRT family and are confident that with his experience in the transport sector as well as his more recent focus on digitalization and process improvements, Hoon Ping is well placed to lead SMRT forward in an era of disruption.

SMRT Chairman also appreciated Kian Hong for his service and contributions as Group CEO over the past four years. He said, “Under Kian Hong, the reliability of the train system has consistently improved in the last four years.

Ngien Hoon Ping Background

Ngien Hoon Ping holds an Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree from the University of Manchester, the United Kingdom. He hasa Master of Science in Systems Engineering degree from the National University of Singapore. An electrical engineer by training, Ngien was Land Transport Authority’s chief executive from 2016 to 2020.

Ngien was formerly the director of Joint Operations at the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He also previously served as Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Finance. He spent almost two decades at the Ministry of Defence. Ngien served as CEO at NTUC FairPrice Group’s Supply Chain Business.

Ngien Hoon Ping’s engineering expertise helped him lay a strong foundation for a significant improvement in rail reliability and safety. He led the delivery of infrastructure projects such as the Thomson-East Coast Line, Mandai Depot, and the new Lornie Highway.

Current SMRT CEO, Mr. Neo said: “It is time for leadership renewal for the next phase of SMRT’s journey … I am confident that Hoon Ping will take SMRT to greater heights.”
